Why Tunnels?

To solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic, transportation networks need to match our 3D cities. Tunneling enables economical, layered transportation networks that can be expanded over time.

Today's roadways occupy valuable surface area in cities. Tunnels put underground space to work and augment existing transportation systems.

Boring Projects

  • Vegas Loop

    Vegas Loop provides fast and convenient transportation to the Las Vegas community and its visitors, having already transported more than 4 million passengers through 14 stations, with transit times between 2 and 8 minutes.

    Clark County and the City of Las Vegas have approved 68 miles of tunnel and 123 stations, cementing the Vegas Loop as a vital piece of the city's future infrastructure.

  • Las Vegas Convention Center Loop

    The LVCC Loop — a 3-station transportation system consisting of 1.7 miles of tunnel — was built in approximately 1 year. The system cost approximately $47 million (firm-fixed price). Tunneling occurred during conventions with over 100,000 attendees and posed zero disruptions or road closures.

    LVCC Loop connects the LVCC West Hall with the existing campus (North/Central/South Halls), and reduces a 45-minute cross-campus walk to approximately 2 minutes.

    LVCC Loop opened in April 2021 for the Mecum Motorcycle Auction and has operated at all subsequent conventions. It has demonstrated peak capacity of over 4,500 passengers per hour, and over 32,000 passengers per day.

  • Music City Loop

    The State of Tennessee and The Boring Company have partnered on a transformative new private transportation project, bringing The Boring Company’s innovative Loop system to Nashville. Music City Loop is an express, all-electric, privately funded and affordable underground transportation system that connects downtown Nashville, Music City Center, and Lower Broadway to West End Ave and the Nashville International Airport (BNA).

  • Dubai Loop

    The Boring Company has signed a construction contract with the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to construct the pilot phase of Dubai Loop. The pilot system, with 6.4 km of tunnel and 4 stations, will connect the Dubai International Financial Centre to the Dubai Mall.

  • Cybertunnel

    The Cybertunnel was purpose-built at the Tesla Gigafactory in Austin, TX to transport finalized Cybertrucks directly from the end of the production line to the final staging area located on the other side of an 8-lane state highway. This tunnel provides a safe, 60-second underground connection, bypassing the previous 12-minute drive on surface roads.

    To construct the Cybertunnel, the Prufrock-3 boring machine “porpoised" out of the ground onto “The Monster” (large retrieval structure) inside the already-constructed factory, and exited the building on an SPMT (Self-Propelled Modular Transporter).

  • R&D Tunnels

    The Boring Company has constructed 7 R&D Tunnels in 3 different cities for the purpose of increasing the speed, reliability, and safety of the Prufrock-series boring machine.

  • Hyperloop

    Hyperloop is a proposed ultra-high speed public transportation system in which passengers travel in autonomous electric pods at 600+ mph. See the original Hyperloop White Paper here.

    A short Hyperloop tunnel was constructed in 2022 in Bastrop to test the vacuum pump systems. In addition, TBC and SpaceX hosted 4 student Hyperloop competitions, where student-built Pods reached speeds up to 288 mph.

  • What are the benefits?

    Weatherproof: rain, snow, wind, and surface temperatures do not affect system operation.

    Invisible:
    tunnel construction does not impact traffic patterns or create any discernible surface noise or vibration.

    Expandable:
    tunnels can be extended and new levels added as additional capacity is required.

    Safe:
    a tunnel is one of the safest places to be during an earthquake. Tunnels protect against falling debris and have been used to transport rescue personnel.

    Fast:
    tunnels are sealed from the elements, making them suitable for low-pressure use with Hyperloop high-speed transportation.

  • What about earthquakes?

    When designed properly, tunnels are some of the safest places to be during an earthquake. From a structural safety standpoint, the tunnel moves uniformly with the ground, in contrast to how surface structures react to earthquakes. Additionally, a large amount of earthquake damage is caused by falling debris, which does not happen inside of tunnels. Some examples:

    • 1994 Northridge Earthquake: No damage to LA subway tunnels.
    • 1989 Loma Prieta (Northern California) Earthquake: No damage to tunnels, which were used to transport rescue personnel.
    • 1985 Mexico City Earthquake: No damage to tunnels, which were used to transport rescue personnel.
  • What's the noise and vibration?

    Once a tunnel boring machine has reached its operating depth of two tunnel diameters, tunneling causes less noise and vibration at the surface than a pedestrian.

  • How about utilities?

    Most utilities are located within 10 feet of the surface. Our tunnels are typically more than 30 feet below the surface, where underground space is currently unused.

  • What do you do with excavated dirt?

    To make the most of excavated dirt, we are developing a way to reuse dirt for bricks and pavers for use in anything from affordable housing to patios to the Pyramids (a famous recent example of dirt-based construction).
